Spring has finally arrived! In Japan, while cherry blossoms are capturing everyone's attention, the countdown to the new season's tea harvest has also begun. We'll be drunk with shincha tasting in a few months.

For now, we're happy to present a collection of pottery from Japan, much of it from the town of Mashiko in Tochigi Prefecture. I lived there in 1999-2000, and made numerous trips back in the following few years.

The people and pottery of Mashiko definitely have a special place in my heart.

We hope that you will also enjoy the warmth of Mashiko-yaki.

Asahina Karigane - 2023 1st Harvest, Stem tea of Gyokuro, 50g
Origin: Asahina Valley, Okabe City, Shizuoka Prefecture
Cultivar: Yabukita
The Asahina Valley in Okabe City produces fine shaded teas such as Gyokuro and Kabuse Sencha. Karigane refers to kuki-cha (stem tea) made specifically from the stems of Gyokuro, whereas "kukicha" may refer to stem tea from sencha, or houjicha (houji-kukicha.) Infuses to a deep golden-green in the first infusion. The flavor and aroma are grassy with a slightly sweet finishing note. Full-bodied, but with very low astringency and lower caffeine content than sencha or gyokuro. More delicate and slightly sweeter than regular kukicha. This tea is also great cold-infused during the hot summer months!
